Milky Way Season
Currently a heatwave and clear skies at night. Its cooler between midnight and 3am which is the only time its dark at the moment. I used a wide 105mm scope to get these shots of objects in or near the Milky way which is the plane of our Galaxy - looking side on at a fried egg :)
Here's the North American Nebula left, being stared at by the Pelican Nebula right. Thisi a great milky Way are in the Northern Skies for Summer and Autumn.
On the Edge of Cassiopeia are this pair - the Heart and Soul Nebulas. The Heart is one of those objects that matches its name, the Soul many people see as a baby - hence its also known as the Embryo Nebula.
This is a work in progress as its only half an hour of exposure so far, the Elephants Trunk Nebula IC1396 in the Head of Cepheus. The actual trunk is a small curly bit just right of centre here.
This is low in the Northern Hemisphere even in midsummer - the Swan (middle) and Eagle (up and a right) Nebulas in Serpens. You need a good view South and West to get these. This is getting towards the centre of our Galaxy in Sagittarius, hence the star and dust density is getting higher.
Just 5 minutes on the Andromeda Galaxy. This is a really to show how wide the little scope is - I can’t fit this Galaxy in most of my scopes!
Here’s my 105mm scope - its great fun and very easy to setup and travel with. Ideal for the summer season when you don’t have much dark time and a lot of the targets in the Milky Way are very large. When Orion comes back round at night in the Winter I want to take some wide views there as well. For the whole of Orion I’ll need to go wider at around 20mm but this one should give me the famous Nebulas in one picture.
